Overview
Lira is the heir to the throne of the sea. As the princess of the sirens, she takes a princes’ heart every year for her birthday. Now she has a total of 17. When she steps out of line taking a heart of a prince prior to next her birthday, her viciously terrifying mother, the Queen of the Sea, casts her out. She must bring the heart of the human, known as the Siren Killer, to her mother in order to return to her rightful place as heir. As she spends more and more time away from her kingdom, she begins to find her humanity.
Review
The Little Mermaid meets Pirates of the Caribbean in this whirlwind fantasy novel. In the beginning, I felt that the author’s descriptions of the countries were incredibly flat. Her writing style was almost non-existent. However, about a third of the way in, the descriptions were so much better and the writer’s style much clearer. She began showing us rather than telling us. I appreciated that.
Lira’s felt a little 2-D at times making it hard to feel for her issues in the beginning. The case against her mom also doesn’t feel very authentic. It felt like the author was using the Little Mermaid story as an excuse to throw the two main characters together. By the end, I felt her issues with her mom were more real, but still more distant than expected. The book didn’t get really good until the two main characters actually met. Even with all these issues, I still quite enjoyed the book. I would recommend this book to those who like spins on classic fairytales.
