“They say that a person’s personality is the sum of their experiences. But that isn’t true, at least not entirely, because if our past was all that defined us, we’d never be able to put up with ourselves. We need to be allowed to convince ourselves that we’re more than the mistakes we made yesterday. That we are all of our next choices, too, all of our tomorrows.”

– Fredrik Backman, Anxious People

Overview

This story is about a bank robbery turned hostage situation, but really it is about idiots. From the point of view of the police, hostages, and bank robber, we learn about each. Each has a complicated and often difficult past which reveals why they are the way they are. As the story weaves all these unlikely characters together, a tale of anxiety, adulthood, loss, and miscommunication unfolds.

Review

In classic Backman’s style, he uses simple sentences to make a deep impact. An easy-to-read book with short chapters, it delights and brings to light serious topics all adults deal with. I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoys meaningful reads with wonderful storytelling.
