Overview

Galaxy Stern is the sole survivor of a multiple homicide case in Los Angeles. A full ride scholarship and a chance to study at the Lethe House. Lethe, the Ninth House, oversees the eight houses as Yale and makes sure they practice magic by the book. These powerful houses boast some of the most prominent people in society today. From bankers to celebrities to politicians.

Review

I appreciated Leigh Bardugo’s descriptive writing style. You really feel like you’re walking the campus of Yale with the main character. However, I had some serious issues with this book. The main character doesn’t really transform or change at all. Sure, she makes some new friends and you get to know her a bit. I could appreciate her sass, but at times she’d say something and it would surprise me. It felt like I didn’t know her well enough to know what to expect, at all.

Side character development was almost non-existent. They were really flat. From her best friend in Los Angeles to the new friends she makes. You don’t get to know them. Who knows maybe we will get more side character development in the second book but there is just not enough of it in the first.

I will reluctantly read the second book, only because I want to know what happens next. I would recommend this book to adults who liked The Magicians by Lev Grossman, or who enjoy New Adult/Adult books on the darker side of magic.
